The embankment on the Aquinnah side of the Menemsha channel will soon need to be repaired, town highway superintendent Jay Smalley told selectmen on Tuesday.

“(The embankment) needs work real bad. I don’t think it’s ever been worked on since they built it,” Mr. Smalley said at a meeting Tuesday.

Mr. Smalley said he would contact the Army Corps of Engineers to obtain the proper permitting. The next steps involve reaching out to the Coast Guard, due to the station’s proximity to the embankment, to see if they would like to be involved in the project.

“With the way the weather is changing, if we have a weather incident, we could lose the road,” Mr. Smalley said.

In other business, town officials said that they were unable to work out a way to transfer compost from the Aquinnah dump to Island Grown Initiative’s processing facility in West Tisbury.

Selectman Juli Vanderhoop,

who is also a board member at IGI, said she would take the problem back to the board to see if they can come up with a solution.

“Let me bring this back and see if we can come up with a solution through IGI and its workers,” she said.

The meeting ended with the selectmen entering executive session to discuss police contracts.
