A stretch of Barnes Road in Oak Bluffs has reopened after a one-vehicle accident snapped a utility pole late Saturday afternoon.

Oak Bluffs police have charged Steven Strople, 27, of Oak Bluffs with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, marked lanes violation, and intimidation of a police officer/court officer/juror/witness.

There were two people in the pickup truck when the accident occurred, police said at the scene. Neither experienced major injuries, according to Oak Bluffs police officer Marc Doyle.

Oak Bluffs police and fire personnel, as well as an Eversource employee, responded to the scene. Early Saturday evening the road was blocked off from Hudson to Washington avenue. The stretch of road remained closed overnight.

Oak Bluffs Sgt. Daniel Cassidy said police received a call at approximately 4:30 p.m. that a truck had crashed into a telephone pole near the intersection of Hudson avenue on the northern section of Barnes Road. The crash snapped the pole and caused the truck to flip over in the middle of the road.

Immediately after the crash, the Oak Bluffs police department, as well as a number of residences, experienced a power outage.

Sergeant Cassidy said the operator and one passenger emerged from the flipped truck and fled the scene. A brief search for the pair ensued, during which police were tipped off to the residence of one of the passengers in the truck. The operator and passenger were apprehended at the home, he said.

After determining the operator of the vehicle, police issued citations. Sergeant Cassidy confirmed that the vehicle was not stolen. Although officers were unable to perform sobriety tests at the scene, police said they believed alcohol was a factor.

Weather conditionms were foggy with poor visibility Saturday night.
