Nelson Sigelman of Vineyard Haven won a first-place award from The New England Outdoor Writers Association last month for a story he wrote for the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.

Down By the River appeared in the September 2018 issue, describing the brooks and streams that run through Island woodlands and swamps and the effects of manmade alterations on native species, including brook trout.

Mr. Sigelman writes the Outdoors column for Martha’s Vineyard Magazine.

The award was announced at the annual meeting of the outdoor writers association, held April 13 in Oxford.
