Fall is a time for contemplation, which of course leads to the winding ways of memory. You could do this on your own, stare out at the ocean, a pond or a rock even, pondering the minute details of childhood. Or you could take this sojourn with a guide, perhaps while nibbling a cookie from your past. Better yet, travel with two guides. Proust comes to mind, along with Philip Weinstein.

Mr. Weinstein is the Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor Emeritus of Literature at Swarthmore College and each fall he helps Vineyarders tackle the literary heavyweights. This season it is Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time.

The six-part series begins on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. Reading lists have been handed out, but fear not, there will not be a quiz.

The discussions take place at the Katharine Cornell Theater, located at 54 Spring street in Vineyard Haven.
