Foul play is not suspected in the death of a man found in the state forest over the weekend, according to police.

State police Sgt. Jeffrey Stone said Tuesday that hunters scouting an area of the state forest Saturday afternoon found the man's body in a camp deep in the woods.

The identity of the man is not being released yet, police said.

Sergeant Stone said police were contacted and the medical examiner is conducting an investigation. “We don’t think there’s any unusual circumstances,” he said, and police do not suspect foul play.

The man was found at about 5 p.m. when two hunters were looking for signs of deer and checking on deer stands in an area of the state forest in Edgartown off a fire lane on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road.

Sergeant Stone said the man had not been seen since Sept. 18.

“It appears that he was camping out in the woods and he passed,” he said.
