Two days of mild conditions were enough to heal the Norton Point barrier beach, which was closed again Tuesday afternoon after the ocean broke through during stormy weather Sunday.

Peter Wells, a longtime Chappaquiddick resident and co-owner of the Chappy ferry, reported that the fragile barrier beach was restored by noon on Tuesday. “All healed up again!” Mr. Wells said in an email.

At midday Sunday, Mr. Wells reported that the ocean was washing over the ribbon of sand, driven by stormy weather. Mr. Wells reported wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour at Chappy point and said the wind was stronger at Wasque. The Trustees of Reservation closed the beach to over-sand through traffic because of the breach.

The beach connecting Chappaquiddick and the Vineyard was restored last spring after an opening that began with an April 2007 storm and lasted for eight years. A September storm also caused a temporary breach; in that case, the breach was closed about three weeks later.
