A Vineyard Haven accountant was sentenced to three years of probation last week after pleading guilty to filing false tax returns in which he underreported more than $800,000 in income.

Roger A. Armstrong, 61, a certified public accountant and tax preparer who lived and worked on the Vineyard, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani to three years of probation, the first nine months spent in home confinement, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz. He was also ordered to pay a $3,000 fine, and at the sentencing hearing, Mr. Armstrong paid $389,365 in restitution.

Mr. Armstrong pleaded guilty in January to three counts of filing false tax returns. Mr. Armstrong owned rental property in Massachusetts and Florida, and for tax years 2009 through 2011, the attorney said, Mr. Armstrong underreported his business gross receipts and his rental income on his tax returns. By not reporting a total of $790,000 in gross receipts and $47,000 in rental income, Mr. Armstrong did not pay $200,000 in taxes, the press release said.
