Edgartown is warning residents about an apparent scam in which the caller pretends to be from the town.

Edgartown IT manager Adam Darack posted a notice late Wednesday on the town website saying that an Edgartown resident received a phone call Wednesday with the caller ID listing the town of Edgartown. The person on the phone said there was a problem with the person’s credit card. Mr. Darack said the resident hung up.

Mr. Darack said technology allows people to disguise their outbound caller ID. “I highly doubt the caller was on the Island and I’m positive it was not Edgartown calling,” he said, adding that the town does not call residents regarding their credit cards. “If such a call is received, I would urge the recipient to hang up immediately,” he said.
