The weekend weather allowed for plenty of outdoor work to get done. Our foliage is at its peak of color and leaves are beginning to fall rapidly. Scarecrows and pumpkins dot the landscape these days in all parts of town.

Anna Carringer over at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is about finished with preparations at the old Marine Hospital building in Vineyard Haven for an afternoon festival for families on the lawn on Sunday from noon to 3 p.m., rain or shine. In celebration of Nancy Luce’s 200th birthday, decorate gingerbread gravestone cookies, create Nancy’s fancy letters on coloring pages, and make chicken hats. Enjoy spider web hopscotch, play Halloween eye spy, and decorate pumpkins with your favorite designs. And don’t forget to come in costume.

You are invited to the West Tisbury library’s annual Halloween party held next Friday, Oct. 31, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. They will be providing spooky hay rides and all sorts of Halloween refreshments and games.

Last Saturday afternoon Nettie Kent, who wore her grandmother’s wedding dress, and Colin Ruel were married on Creek Hill in Menemsha. It was an absolutely beautiful, picture-perfect afternoon. About 200 people gathered for the ceremony. The bride’s grandmother, Jan Eaton, and his grandparents Jimmy and Roberta Morgan were among the many present. My wife and Linda Baughman were walking on Menemsha Beach several hundred feet away and could clearly hear the cheering and applause after the ceremony.

Jen Wool of South Road returned home on Tuesday after a trip to Milwaukee, Wis., where she visited with her friend Lisa and her children. Her significant other, Dan Leventritt, met her at the boat and took her out to dinner.

Phyllis Meras of Music street returned home Wednesday from an adventurous 10-day business trip to Germany. She also had the opportunity to visit several friends. Her friend, Linda Baughman of Philadelphia, had been watching her house and feeding the livestock in her absence and has returned to her home.

Jill Carlton, her husband Pete Karman, and their son Alex of New Haven, Conn., were at her summer home on State Road to close it up for the season over the weekend. Alex put the garden to bed while his parents finished their work in the house.

The annual Fall Scarecrow Festival is here and scarecrows are starting to spring up all over the Island! Island businesses get in return for making a donation to the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, a scarecrow erected in front of their stores. Mid Island Auto has a big one in front of their garage. Over 75 scarecrows can be seen around the Island through Oct. 31.

Well, Tom Dresser has written yet another book, Music on Martha’s Vineyard: A History of Harmony. His first talk was at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum yesterday, and on Wednesday, Oct. 29, he’ll speak at the Edgartown library at 7 p.m.

Tomorrow is Electronics Disposal Day from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The location is on the campus of Community Services in Oak Bluffs, across from the high school.

Geoff Currier reports that John Hough Jr. will participate in a Speakeasy series evening on Tuesday at the State Road Restaurant to benefit the West Tisbury Library Foundation. His latest novel, Little Big Horn, was recently released to critical acclaim.

On Oct. 27, 1947 the Grange sponsored a very successful costume party for 35 children and a large number of adults at the Agricultural Hall. The party opened with all the children in costume marching around the room so they could be judged. First prize for the most attractive was won by three-year-old Karen Barker dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, second went to Carol Spencer in costume as Cinderella, and third to Margaret Duquette who dressed as a little old-fashioned lady. First prize for the most horrible costume was awarded to yours truly, second to George Churchill, and third to Judith Cronig. The hall was attractively decorated with festoons of crepe paper decorations and the windows latticed with orange and black paper. Lanterns and pumpkins were hung, including a witch peeking out from the parted curtain on the stage. All of this work was done by young ladies of the Grange: Marjorie Manter, Alice Magnuson, Virginia Rabello and Elizabeth King. Games were played and the refreshment table fascinated the children with its decorations of donut men with candy faces made by Lillian Magnuson. She also served cider, Halloween lollipops and other treats.

Belated birthday greetings to Caitlyn Kirkland, Peter Ochs and David Corriveau. Tomorrow would have been John Adams and Abigail Smith’s 250th wedding anniversary.
