The pale buff felines affectionately known on the premises of the Animal Shelter as “Merri’s kittens” will probably be gone by the time this column is published. They were orphaned soon after birth, but a kind and tireless shelter volunteer, Merri Walkenstein, bottle fed them around the clock, weaned and cuddled them, and nurtured them until they grew into the perfect little fellows they are now. A new owner has expressed interest in taking both of them together. Mission accomplished, Merri.

A heartbreaking parting took place at the shelter today. Two well-loved cats had to be surrendered because a member of the household became allergic to them. The female, Nala, is a pale beige tiger and her male companion, Gizmo, is a large marmalade guy. Nala, at two and a half, is slightly older than Gizmo, her constant companion. They were living the good life in their original home. Now they need new digs with an owner who will provide the same amenities they have come to expect. Although the shelter would prefer that they go together to a new home, they are young enough to adapt to new surroundings separately.

Rumor has it that two young Labrador retrievers are to be surrendered to the shelter, maybe by the time you read this. The male is a yellow lab and the female is black. They are 10 months old. Unfortunately, they could not come to a peaceful understanding with the cats already in residence so they must go to a feline free household. Call the shelter for an update on these animals if interested.

Meanwhile, back at the animal shelter lobby, Harrison Ford, the large black guinea pig, munches his carrots and greens in solitude. He is a sweet boy who needs a change of scenery. He would be a perfect class pet as he is sturdy enough to stand up to inexpert petting and has no aggressive tendencies.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662.
