Ever wonder what it feels like to vote for the Oscars, to decide which film gets all the glory? Well, in short order this weekend is your chance.

It’s time again for the 17th annual Manhattan Short Film Festival, the only festival where you don’t have to be on site to enjoy not just the movies, but also the fringe benefits. It is billed as the world’s first global film festival.

The way it works is that the films are shown across six continents from Sept. 26 through Oct. 5. Here on the Vineyard, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center will lead the charge, showing films Friday, Sept. 26, through Sunday, Sept. 28, each night at 7:30 p.m.

Moviegoers will watch 10 short films selected from over 500 entries culled from around the world and choose their favorites. The results will be tallied and the winner announced on Oct. 7.

The films are a diverse lot, from a man looking for love to the trust essential in mountain climbing to a graphic novel style of film about the repercussions of crime. For a list of the films, visit mvfilmsociety.com.
