Whether he was calling on former students at the West Tisbury town meeting podium or strolling the golf course with friends, Pat Gregory was a man who always enjoyed the company of others.

Mr. Gregory died on May 16, the victim of a homicide while hiking in a remote canyon in California.

But the memorials to him endure.

On Sept. 15, Mr. Gregory was remembered by friends and family at the first annual Pat Gregory Memorial Golf Tournament, held in his honor at the Woods Hole Golf Club. Sixty-seven people hit the links and shared memories of their friend who loved to teach, to work and to play golf.

Anthony Finocchio, who lives in Boston and Falmouth and was friends with Mr. Gregory, hosted the outing. The event raised $10,626, and all the money will be donated to a charitable organization on Martha’s Vineyard, to be determined at a later date.

Mr. Finocchio said the idea to host a charity golf tournament came to him after talking with other people affected by the news Pat’s death this past spring. “I thought about Pat a lot and I wanted to do something this year. With his family’s permission I thought about what Pat would want and after talking to his family and friends we all thought he would want a charity golf tournament,” he said this week.

“I'd like to think on Monday he was there,” Mr. Finocchio said. “It was a perfect day at a gorgeous course and we were there just doing what he loved to do while raising money for a good cause.” The golf clubs Mr. Gregory used to play were also on the course, a reminder of a man who loved the game.
