Now this is the weather I love. The sky is that perfect blue. The clouds are so white and fluffy and there is no humidity. Plus, you can sleep at night with a blanket on. I don’t know how many of you have been watching, but the sunsets have been so beautiful.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Llana Kagan, who celebrated her day Sept. 1; Talia Estrella, Sept. 6; Simone Albino, Tessa Hammond, Jackson Munson and Lukah Vieira, who all celebrated Sept. 7; Kimberly Marques and Jack O’Brien, Sept. 8; Tyler Vanderhoop, Sept. 9; Anina Garvin, Sept. 10; Caroline Kelleher, Sept. 14; Benjamin Burgoyne and Colin Hurley, Sept. 16; Jaydon Fuller, Luiz Lacerda, Isabella Osborn, Vincent Paciello and to Wyatt Thornton, who all celebrate their birthday today, Sept. 19.

I am seeing many different hats being worn around town. Of course I mean the new derby caps. There are the regular colors, but I think the camouflage hats are winning out.

Derby time used to mean that the wives would be home waiting for their husbands to come home after working, then fishing all hours of the day and night. But as time has gone on, the ratio of women fishing is getting bigger. I think some of the wives have been bitten harder than the husbands when it comes to fishing.

Registration is open for all ACE MV fall classes: online at acemv.org (where you can view and download the course catalog), by mail, or stop by the new ACE MV office at 35 Greenwood avenue, second floor at the Martha’s Vineyard Family Center building across from the library in Vineyard Haven. Class sizes are limited and early registration is encouraged.

The fall catalog contains classes for all ages and interests, including an impressive range of job skill training courses in computer technology and business, math and English classes to prepare for college entrance or the GED exams, undergraduate and graduate level college courses, and a variety of enrichment classes such as iPad basics, creative nonfiction writing, jazz appreciation, canning tomatoes and jam and more. In total this fall there are 36 classes to choose from, including certificate and college credit (at graduate and undergraduate levels) through Fitchburg State University. Classes are guaranteed to take the edge off the darkening fall days and bring the community together for the pleasure of learning something new and sharing skills.

The Blodgett family came to my front door, dogs and all, to take a walk into town. So I leashed up Harry and down we went. I had not wandered into town much this summer, but the few times I did it was very crowded and very busy and I could not wait to get out.

When we got into town it was nice to see some people still around and the shops still open. Having the dogs with us, I noticed that there were stores with water bowls in the doorway for the dogs, which I thought was nice.

We went to the docks and looked for bait, then we wandered up to Kelley street and of course we checked the Kelley House to see if they still had their milk and cookies, and much to our delight they did. They have the best chocolate chip cookies, so we grabbed a couple for the walk home. I know it might have defeated the purpose of the walk, but they have the best cookies.

My young Englishman, Scott, has returned to England after a very busy summer. He worked hard and met so many people and he was very happy. We never got to Plymouth, or to a few other things we wanted to show him, but he loved the Island and loved his rides up-Island and all the little places we showed him.

I think I can almost sympathize with the parents with empty nest syndrome because I have no dishes in the sink. There is no one looking around the corner to see if I am still awake, so we can talk 'til midnight. I think I will get used to it like everyone else.

Hope to see the derby headquarters hopping with people and fish, good luck to you all.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
