School is open — the children are excited as are the parents. Please be mindful of the young ones heading to their buses. Plan your travel down-Island accordingly so as not to be stuck behind an early morning or afternoon bus.

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe will be sponsoring the 10th annual Pow Wow on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6 and 7, at Aquinnah Circle. Gates open at 11 a.m. with grand entry on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. There will be native drumming, dance, vendors as well as a 50/50 raffle and spot dance contest. Tribal members are admitted free with their tribal ID; adults $10; children, elders, and veterans $5. No alcohol, drugs, fires, coolers or pets allowed. Elders, active military, and veterans with identification may travel to Aquinnah on the VTA buses at half price.

Aquinnah Public Library will continue with the Saturday afternoon crafts with kids with drop-in storytime from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Mad Libs continues every Tuesday afternoon as well as stories and crafts on Thursdays.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum will feature the annual ART party at Eric and Molly Glasgow’s Grey Barn Farm in Chilmark tomorrow evening. Tickets are $150. On Sept. 13, there will be a West Chop house tour and an opportunity to explore five beautiful homes, and learn about West Chop’s early beginning as a summer community. Tickets range from $35 to $75, reservations required at 508-627-4441.

The Aquinnah selectmen received wonderful news at their weekly meeting on Tuesday evening. Kimberly Brown, newly appointed town accountant, was pleased to announce the unused project allocations review will return more than $200,000 to the free cash account before the end of the month. The figures will be available eight months in advance to the delight of everyone at the town hall.

The primary election will be held on Tuesday for many offices in the commonwealth. The Aquinnah polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. See you there.

Cynthia Vanderhoop Akins of Fort Duschesne, Utah and her daughter Thea Akins of Tacoma, Wash., are at their Vanderhoop home for their annual August visit with family and friends.

Judy Belain and her guest Tony returned to Wayland on Friday after spending two weeks at her Belain home.

Dr. Thomas Green enjoyed the holiday weekend at his home with guests Annemarie, and Rick and Debbie of New Jersey.

Condolences to the family and friends of Peter Griesser who passed away on August 24. Peter was a Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School classmate in the class of 1964. We had anticipated Peter attending our reunion next month after a long absence from the Vineyard. He will be greatly missed.

Condolences to Carol Hotz and her children in the loss of her husband Paul Hotz. Paul spent many hours in Aquinnah in his duties as a natural resource officer for the commonwealth.

Great news — Adriana Ignacio has been recuperating at Spaulding Rehab in Boston and is due home within the next week.

Ella Madison Mahoney returned to her studies at the School of Visual Arts on Wednesday. Ella is one of 15 students who has been offered an opportunity to study in Rome for the spring semester.

Emerson Mahoney is residing with his father Michael Mahoney in Bourne this school year where he is a student at Bourne High School. Emerson will be playing ice hockey with the Boston League Hockey teams and being closer to Boston will be much easier for his travel.

Thank you to Mrs. Hannah Malkin for once again providing her swimming pool for the enjoyment and the swim lessons with Michael Wooley and staff. Thank you also to Charlie Shipway for another successful year of sailing lessons on Menemsha Pond. Charlie was assisted by Noah. It was another successful summer season for the youth of Aquinnah.

Mrs. Anne Vanderhoop Madison was transferred from Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital a week ago, following a fall and a resulting fractured hip. She is now resting comfortably at Spaulding Rehab in Sandwich, where she will undergo extensive physical therapy over the next month.

Aquinnah firefighter Katy Smith has returned to her sophomore year studies at Simmons College where she is majoring in physical and sports medicine.

Grace Vanderhoop has returned to her senior year studies at Simmons College where she is majoring in mathematics.

John and Jan Wightman have returned to their Aquinnah home after spending the month of August in Attleboro, caring for Jan’s mother.

Happy 3rd anniversary wishes to Chelsea Ives and Sean Kelley as they celebrate on Sept. 10.

Happy 5th anniversary wishes to Maggie Anderson and Jesse Wiener as they celebrate on Sept. 12.
