Filmmaker Abby Ginzberg will be on hand Sunday, August 10, when her story of South Africa’s freedom fighting attorney, Albie Sachs, is screened by the Summer Institute Film Series at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in Vineyard Haven.

Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa is set against the dramatic events that led to the overthrow of apartheid in South Africa. As a young man, Mr. Sachs defended those committed to ending apartheid. He was imprisoned in solitary confinement in Cape Town for his actions, tortured through sleep deprivation and forced into exile. In 1988 he was blown up by a car bomb set by the South African security forces in Maputo, Mozambique. The bombing cost him his right arm and the sight of one eye, but after a long year of rehabilitation in England, he recovered.

Returning to South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela, Mr. Sachs helped write the new Constitution and was then appointed as one of the first 11 judges to the new Constitutional Court.

A forum with Ms. Ginzberg will follow Sunday’s screening.

The Summer Institute’s films are presented at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $12 and are available at the film center’s website, mvfilmsociety.org.
