Summer has arrived in Aquinnah — the summer programs are underway. Thank you to Betty Joslow for planning and organizing the schedules and instructors. Charles Shipway IV will once again teach sailing on Menemsha Pond, while Michael Wooley will once again teach swimming at the pool of Mrs. Hannah Malkin.

The 11th annual Old South Road Children’s Fourth of July parade was rescheduled to July 5, as were many events over the weekend due to the impending Hurricane Arthur. Capt. Buddy Vanderhoop led the parade this year. Face painting was held at the Goldfield-Mannion home. The reviewing stand was at the Murphy home, where flags were passed out. The Woods and Haskells made maps and buried the treasure on the beach. Kate Murphy and Tim Kausch and their young Noah were on hand. Michael Norkus was the birthday boy and serenaded as always. Jacob Bazzy rode with his dad Derrill. Max Batzer and company rode in the orange THING. Gary Foster lead the Hell’s Angels on his Vespar scooter. Paul, Theresa, and Noah Manning rode in their decorated float. Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop led the Vagabonds. The Vickerys rode on their lawn mower and pulled their grandchildren along. Carl Widdiss and Pesto Pam Glavin were truly missed. Bruce and Shelley Eckman’s family were in their family float. Yours truly was out of town selling Pam’s Pesto at the Farmers’ Market. The Aquinnah parade has significantly grown from an initial dozen marchers to over 300 participants over the past two years.

Aquinnah Public Library continues with story time and crafts for younger children on Thursdays at 3 p.m., special events and various crafts every Saturday over the summer, and new drop in story-reading time for kids (post beach — on Saturdays between 2 and 3:30 p.m.) Tuesdays will be mad libs day, and any rainy days will include Legos. Every day is really kids day at the library.

Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival presents Cinema Circus on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Chilmark Community Center. There will be films for kids, workshops, and of course the circus — all free. Food will be available throughout the day made by Quitsa Cuisine (Theresa Manning and Kendra Buresch Carroll).

Do not forget to watch Satisfaction, a new series on USA Network, which will debut on July 17 and is produced by Gary Foster of East Pasture. Gary and Lisa were delighted to have their daughters Daryn and Kayla with them over the weekend. The young ladies are now busy with their careers in Manhattan.

Tom Dresser, Jay Schofield and Herb Foster will present their book Martha’s Vineyard in World War II at the Aquinnah Public Library on Thursday, July 17, at 5 p.m. All are welcome to attend for free. Books will be available for $20.

Tuesdays at Twilight concert featuring Willy Mason and Goodnight Louise is at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury, sponsored by the West Tisbury Library Foundation with proceeds going to the landscaping of the new library. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, half price for kids 12 and under. The ArtCliff Diner food truck will serve dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Willy Mason is well known on the national and international music scene, the son of Jemima James and Michael Mason.

Friday mornings is the best time for a tour of Grey Barn Farm on South Road in Chilmark. Tours begin at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per adult and children are free. If you miss their tours, try their new Edelon or Prufrock cheeses at the Farmers’ Market.

If you are an aficionado of the work of Thomas Hart Benton, there are a few lithographs as well as a poster print of his at Jane Slater’s Oversouth Antique Shop in Menemsha. As a matter of fact, the art she displays is always a delight and the antiques really make you feel as though you are walking back in time, perhaps in a museum rather than an antique shop. Such magnificent treasures.

Maya, Jade and Antone Araujo, children of Todd and Jaeleen Araujo, have arrived from their home in Juneau, Alas., to spend a few weeks with their grandparents Michael and Eleanor Hebert, as well as with Joseph Araujo and with their great-grandmother Barbara Francis.

Condolences to the family and friends of Robert W. Kelley who passed away at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Monday. As retired president of the Edgartown National Bank, he assisted many families with their homes and businesses across the Vineyard.

One of the newest workers at Menemsha Texaco is young Coltrane Leport, son of Darren and Nancy Leport, and grandson of Beverly Wright and Robert MacDiarmid. My how they grow up way too fast.

It was encouraging to see Christopher MacLeod on Monday as he is recuperating from a major cardiac event. He looks well and realizes he has a long road ahead of him.

Condolences to the family and friends of Sal Monteiro who passed away on Monday at Falmouth Hospital. Sal was the cheery worker in the press room at the Vineyard Gazette. He will certainly be missed by all of us who knew him.

Tisbury Firefighters Association annual car show will be dedicated in memory of Ricky Vanderhoop — a big car buff. The event will be held on August 31 and preregistration may be made at DYF Games on State Road in Tisbury.

Lisa Bibko-Vanderhoop has her 2015 Sea Dog calendar on sale at various outlets across the Vineyard. Chloe Cook-Rakela is in two on the inserts on the June page.

Carl Widdiss is still receiving his treatments at the Cancer Center in Phoenix. His family and friends have been steadfastly cheering him on. All of the donations have certainly been encouraging to Carl and very much appreciated. The strength in his voice is a great sign that he is improving each day.

Jesse Wiener and his wife Maggie arrived on Monday afternoon for a brief visit with his parents Jerry Wiener and Carolyn Feltz, after a brief visit with Maggie’s Anderson clan on the Cape. They missed his grandfather John Feltz by one day as he would arrive for the summer with his daughter Janice as the young couple were leaving for New York. Jesse and Maggie have resided in Los Angeles for the past two years and drove across the country this past week to ultimately relocate in Manhattan or the suburbs. We will look forward to their visits much more frequently — and by the way, Carolyn and Jerry never did make it to Hollywood.

Happy 90th birthday wishes to John Feltz who celebrated his special day on July 7 surrounded by his children in New Jersey. He will have a special celebration upon his arrival with his Vineyard daughters, Carolyn and Janice.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Chelsea Hobbs on July 12. Robert Peterson parties on July 13. My favorite publisher/editor Richard Reston celebrates his special day on July 14. Jake Baird will be 14 on July 14 and will celebrate in Colorado. Tobias Vanderhoop parties on July 15 and shares the day with his uncle, John O. Vanderhoop. Dr. Gerald Steinberg celebrates on July 17 and shares the day with Barbara Okun. Jed Smith parties on July 18 as will Connie Athearn Taylor.
