If you think that Comcast for Chappy is a done deal, don’t. The deadline is fast approaching. We need a minimum of 270 subscribers to send in a check. If you have any questions, please call 774-310-1020 or send an email to ChappyCable@gmail.com. If you did not receive your payment letter, or have changed your mind and wish to sign up it’s not too late, but it will be soon! If we don’t pull together on this as a community we will miss our chance to get the infrastructure we need to take full advantage of what technology has to offer. I was surprised to learn that Comcast has a special low rate of $9.95 per month to qualifying households with children. If you don’t feel that bringing Comcast to Chappy would be in your own best interest, perhaps the concept of enabling our Chappy children and grandchildren to connect firmly with the rest of civilization will move you to participate. At Mytoi garden springtime activities are in full swing. Without going into the Latin names, I can tell you that there are blossoms everywhere of all shapes and sizes. If you sit for a while in the little shelter at the top of the garden, a very vocal catbird will run through its repertoire of imitations for you. The more often that you visit the garden, the more you are rewarded each time.

The Trustees Of Reservations have made dozens of field trips to the Cape Pogue Lighthouse with Vineyard school children during the past month, including a weekend tour especially for Chappy kids. The experience leaves a lasting impression on them. Education director Molly Peach says that she has heard recounts by high schoolers of their lighthouse visit way back in the second grade. Superintendent Chris Kennedy reports that there are plenty of bluefish, so come and get ‘em.

For the moment, the bluffs at Wasque are experiencing a reprieve from erosion. The opening continues to change weekly. Even though it looks very attractive to swimming, you will be surprised that the beach drops off precipitously just a few steps from shore. An incoming tide at least will carry you into the shallows of Katama Bay, while the outgoing current will pull you out into the chop and swirling currents of Muskeget Channel. Think before you leap!

The Slipaway Farm’s first CSA produce exceeded our expectations. The farmers have put tons (literally and actually) of effort into enriching the soil. The farm stand will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all summer long. Visit the Slipaway website for interesting updates.

The next Chappy Book Club selection is Mark Twain’s classic Huckleberry Finn. You have until Wednesday, July 23, to reread it, or perhaps read it for the first time if you used Cliffs Notes to write your book report in high school. Discussion will be lead that day at 10:30 a.m. at the CCC by Kathy Stuart.

Mark your calendar for the CCC summer fair on Saturday, July 19. Check the CCC website and bulletin board for updates. New this year is the community tag sale on Sunday, July 13, from noon to 3 p.m. Save your stuff. You must sign up ahead of time, so stop in at the center and speak to Lynn.

The annual CIA meeting will be convened at the CCC on Saturday, July 5, with coffee and pastries on the porch beginning at 8 a.m., with the meeting starting at 9 a.m. If you’ve been avoiding the CIA meetings in the past because of the membership fee, please note that the fee has been made voluntary. These gatherings are always interesting and informative. Don’t miss out on the best entertainment that Chappy has to offer.

Remember that per order of the Edgartown police, Chappy ferry service is limited to passengers only on the 4th of July between 4 p.m. and when the parade ends. The ferry stops altogether during the fireworks.

Just like those other first-name-only-required ladies Madonna and Cher, when someone says Luanne you know just whom they are referring to. Luanne Johnson of BiodiversityWorks will present a nature talk, Life on the Beach, this Tuesday, July 1, at 6 p.m. at the CCC. So, you think that you know something about what lives on our beaches? Luanne will reveal the unvarnished truth.
