I am writing to offer my strong support for the application of Stop & Shop to build a new store on Water Street in Vineyard Haven. Our local officials and representatives from Stop & Shop have worked hard over the past year to ensure that the new store is a benefit to the entire community.

As a local resident, I can attest that the downtown area is in serious need of an upgrade. Given Tisbury’s current fiscal situation, we cannot expect the taxpayers will foot the bill. Fortunately, we have a good corporate citizen in Stop & Shop that is willing to make an investment in our community.

In addition to putting forward a plan that will fit into the character of our Island, Stop & Shop is also willing to pay for improvements to the adjacent municipal parking lot, as well as relocating and restoring the Prouty House.

It is difficult to understand why anybody would oppose the project. The company is taking an outdated building and proposing to build a beautiful new store that will better serve the needs of Island residents and visitors. The building will essentially be the same size but will be much more attractive and convenient.

Stop & Shop has proven to be a great corporate citizen, and I have no doubt that they will continue to be an asset to the Island. Their new store should be allowed to move forward without any additional delay.
