Aha! Spring hath sprung. Birds are in full chorus awaiting the pinkletinks. Saws are whirring as tree surgeons operate on the fallen limbs. Landscapers and farmers are tilling the soil. There cannot be any more signs of snowflakes until next winter — we hope.

Seeds will be shared and exchanged at the Aquinnah Public Library for the next five weeks. Tomorrow will be planting of some of the seeds.

Pecha Kucha night will be presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum this evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Menemsha Room at the Harbor View Hotel. The program features 20 slides in 20-second segments of intriguing subjects.

The West Tisbury library will have their grand opening on Saturday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We will miss the clerk of the works, John, but he promises to return for another similar job on the Vineyard.

Community Baptist Church of Gay Head parishioners will have a conversation on Sunday, March 23, following the 9 a.m. service by the Rev. Ellen Tatreau. The annual Community Baptist Church of Gay Head meeting will be held on Sunday, April 3, at the Totem Pole Inn at 7 p.m. There will be a closed ballot for Community Baptist members only to vote on renewing, extending or terminating the covenant.

Condolences to the family and friends of Patricia Ann Brown, R.N., who passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on March 11. Pat was the nurse to hundreds of students across the Vineyard. She was the one-room Gay Head School nurse, ultimately becoming the school nurse at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. She cared for one and all in a calming, compassionate and non-judgmental manner, no matter what the circumstances may be. Services will be held in her hometown of Edgartown on June 27 — her birthday.

Condolences to the family and friends of Capt. Louis Larsen, widower of Mary Smith Larsen, who passed away in West Palm Beach on March 11, surrounded by his children Daniel, Louis Jr., Betsy and Kristine. He was a family friend of six generations and admired by all. Louie was a mentor to everyone. He was one of the elders who encouraged me to complete the cardiac rehab program. We had some lively conversations on the stationary bicycles, but our most sentimental conversations took place while we were sitting behind Larsen’s Fish Market overlooking Menemsha Harbor and reminiscing about the days of fishing in the past. He will be greatly missed, not only in Menemsha and in Chilmark, but across the Vineyard.

Condolences to the family and friends of Stacy Viera who passed away on March 11 at her Oak Bluffs home. Stacy and I were co-workers for many years at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, as was her sister Bertie, who was also a MVRHS classmate.
