The Island awoke to a fresh blanket of snow Sunday following an overnight blast of more winter weather. The storm caused some cancellations Saturday night but no major problems were reported. Ferries were running again Sunday morning.

Total snowfall overnight was 5.5 inches at the National Weather Service station in Edgartown.

Melted precipitation was recorded at 1.14 inches. Winds were primarily from the north and reached gale force at times.

Accumulating snow ended just before midnight.

The latest storm brings total snowfall so far in February to 13.7 inches on the Vineyard. The total snowfall since Dec. 1 is 36.1 inches.

In December 2013 the Island had 13.7 inches of snow. In January of this year 19.9 inches of snow fell. Last year in January the Island had 10 inches of snow, and in February 2013 15 inches were recorded.

It’s been a wet winter with much rain in addition to the snow. There were seven days this month with melted precipitation totaling 5.27 inches. If that rain had fallen as snow, the Island would be buried. One inch of precipitation roughly translates to a foot of snow.

But rain is more the norm than snow on the Island in winter. Average snowfall for the Vineyard is 24.7 inches.
