For the third straight year the varsity girls’ hockey team is headed to the postseason.

The team shut out visiting Nauset/Cape Tech 9-0 Saturday afternoon to secure their berth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association tournament. With a 9-2-2 record (6-0-1), they are undefeated in the league.

Senior Alex Clark kicked off the scoring spree less than a minute into Saturday’s game, with senior cocaptain Callie Jackson notching a goal shortly after. Clark scored once more before the game ended, and earned two assists. Megan Burke scored her first varsity goal, and freshman goalie Julia Bettencourt picked up the shutout.

The win comes on the heels of what head coach John Fiorito described as “the biggest regular season game we’ve ever played” on Friday. In that game the Vineyarders traveled to Dennis-Yarmouth in a contest to decide the winner of the Southeastern Massachusetts Girls Hockey League. Both teams entered with equal 5-0-1 records in the league.

Coach Fiorito described the match as “a good back and forth game.”

Juniors Sydney Davies and Aubrey Ashmun were among the standouts.

“We probably played our best period of the season in the third,” the coach said.

An earlier version of this story reported that the girls were the first team to qualify for postseason play. Boys' basketball also qualified earlier in the day at an away game Saturday.
