With the news that solar developer Broadway Electrical would be closing its operation, Tisbury selectmen this week discussed other options for completing construction of a town solar array.

Broadway Electrical is the former contractor for the Cape and Vineyard Electrical Cooperative’s phase two solar projects. The group signed a contract with CVEC in April 2012 to build solar arrays at 22 sites across the Cape and Islands.

Broadway confirmed last week that it was going out of business, leaving the future of two Vineyard projects, one in Tisbury and the other in West Tisbury, uncertain.

Tisbury’s 63-kilowatt array was set to be built on the former town compost site. The town is also working with CVEC on a larger array at the capped landfill. That project is still on track to be completed by June 2014. Only projects completed before this deadline are eligible for state tax credits.

“We’ve done a lot of legwork on this small solar array and I think we should continue,” selectman Tristan Israel said at the board’s Tuesday meeting. “But I think maybe we should look at some other options besides just CVEC.” The Cape and Vineyard Electrical Cooperative has said that it is pursuing transfer of Broadway Electrical’s projects to the company’s financiers.

Chairman of the board Jeffrey Kristal suggested that the town talk with Vineyard Power.

In other business, new Tisbury police officer Kindia Roman was appointed and sworn in to the department. The board also formally welcomed new department of public works director Glen Mauk, who takes over for Fred LaPiana. Mr. LaPiana retired in December.

Selectmen approved a letter of support for a Habitat for Humanity initiative to build a duplex on Marion’s Way. The letter accompanies a Habitat for Humanity application to qualify for 40B affordable housing.

The board asked town administrator John (Jay) Grande to draft a cover letter in support of an Island boards of health initiative asking Nstar to eliminate use of certain herbicides and to maintain right-of-ways via mechanical or agricultural means. The cover letter accompanies a separate letter from the Tisbury board of the health to NStar.

The board also approved a joint grant application with the town of Oak Bluffs for a Community Development Block Grant, and appointed D. Alexandra Cook to the Vineyard Haven Housing Trust. Crossing guard Kevin Michael Heslin received an appointment through June 30.
