Memorize this weather and don’t complain next July 25, when it is humid and 93 degrees outside!

But if you are longing to get away, Sherm and Susie Goldstein are offering their annual staycation on-Island. I have used this terrific service and find it very refreshing. In honor of their 29 years at the Mansion House, all rooms for Islanders are going for $29 per person, based on double occupancy. This entitles Islanders to a great view, use of the cupola, continental breakfast, and all gym services — including the pool. I have enjoyed just hanging out in the library or lobby. Sometimes I run into Islanders I haven’t seen in years! True, the restaurant is not yet open, but you can enjoy Mocha Mott’s, the ArtCliff, Le Grenier and many other eating spots just footsteps away. Call 508-693-2200 or make reservations online. I’ll see you on Main street.

As a lover of poetry and all things haiku, I will also meet up with you next Tuesday night, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the program room of our library. The Martha’s Vineyard Poets’ Collective, a most interesting group of your friends and neighbors who make their living at other jobs, will read their original work. The workshop director of this creative club has a master’s of fine arts in poetry from Warren Wilson College. Refreshments? Of course.

All activities hold their breath for the Patriots. The Federated Church has re-scheduled its cabaret from Jan. 11 to Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. All other information is the same. You have until tomorrow to pick up your game snacks and libations.

However, you can still make the second Saturday breakfast at the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven at the parish house on William street tomorrow from 9 to 11 a.m. and catch the game later. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, oatmeal, juice and coffee for only $8 per person, $5 for each additional family member. A family of four eats for $25. Reservations are not required and if you need more information, call 508-693-1539.

Who doesn’t love Beatrix Potter? Aficionado Betsy Bray will present an illustrated talk about Beatrix Potter’s life and work at our library at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12. Betsy has been a member of the Beatrix Potter Society since 1984. The program is free and refreshments will be served. This is yet another event brought to us by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

Confidential to Lyn K: Nonna and I both finished And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini, a wonderful novel. I re-read Oliver Sacks’ The Island of the Colorblind. All of his books are so interesting. There is mention of Martha’s Vineyard in this one. Nonna just finished, and I have started, The Man In the White Sharkskin Suit by Lucette Lagnado. This is a memoir about her Jewish family’s exodus from Old Cairo to the New World. Fascinating. Lyn, when are you going to come visit and see all my books, not only in bookcases but also propping up beds and broken dressers and tables? I am proud to announce that the birthday bandwagon pulls along my grandson, Dominic Leigh Clark, today as he turns 10. Sharing his day are Aja Stamp, whose beautiful jewelry is on sale at Conroy’s Apothecary, Sandra Healy, Brigitte Araujo, Teika Lampart and Rita Shapiro. Maddox Ann Tenbrook, Brittany Blacker, Debbie Morelli, Tony Nordquist, Judy Thomas, and Sara Rose Kuehne are honored on Jan. 11. On January 12th, Gay Nelson, Nathalie Penicaud, Matt Howes, and Inez Montanile will celebrate on Jan. 12. January 13 shines on Virginia Grant, Yvette Rigaud, Anthony Ferreira Coelho, Marilyn Manning and Allan Davey. January 14 smiles on Anne Dudley Williamson, Nora Cowett and Lacey Evelyn Munn. Barbara McCahill claims Jan. 15. And on Jan. 16, Maribeth Roden, Thaw Malin and Myra Romain take the cake. Many happy returns.
