Chilmark is off and running — or not — in very cold temperatures and with the usual winter winds. Our temperatures are higher than some off-Island neighbors, but that is small comfort when the numbers are single digits.

Please note a correction: the free weekly movies at the Chilmark library are on Fridays. They will be showing the Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire film Funny Face for the winter opening tonight. All are welcome at no charge, and popcorn and drinks are offered. Next week, Jan. 17, the movie will be Sabrina.

Bob Conway is home from an exciting eight days visiting his daughter Robin in New Jersey. They toured New York city and enjoyed the annual Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall, dinner at Bar Americana and a viewing of the huge tree at Rockefeller Center.

Stanley Larsen has lunches to go and choices of cooked or stove-ready seafood at the Menemsha Fish Market. His phone is 508-645-2282 if you want to order ahead and have it ready for your arrival. It is nice to have a place to go for lunch in Menemsha, even in January.

February 8 is the date to save for the Chilmark School PTO annual dance and social at the community center. More details as we get closer, but be ready for dancing to Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish and much more.

We can have a little fun this slow news month going through the annual town report of 1914 that I have found. The selectmen of 100 years ago were Henry H. Allen, Horace L. Flanders and Hertford C. Mayhew. Women still didn’t vote and there were 113 paid-up voters. The tax rate was $13 per $1,000 and the tax collector was Orlin F. Davis. He was paid $100 per annum for the job. It cost the town $74.43 to run the town hall that year — that included heat, lights and furnishings, but they realized $76.75 for rental of the hall throughout the year. A bit of history: there used to be a stage on the second floor of the original town hall that was much used for entertainments, school functions and more. The large painted canvas stage curtain still exists and is in the care of the Chilmark Historical Commission.

The Chilmark Community Church continues the soup suppers at the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. All are welcome for food and some early evening socializing.

The Federated Church in Edgartown has changed the date of their All Church Cabaret Night. They moved it to March 22 at the church. It will be a musical evening with Peter Boak at the piano and many singers along with some comedy, magic and more.

Elmore (Bud) Mayhew has been transferred from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston to a care facility in New Bedford. His family hopes to have him back on the Island soon. We hope to have that address next issue so that cards can be sent, as his condition is improving and he will enjoy hearing from his friends.
