It is 50 degrees outside so I am thinking it will not be a white Christmas, but by the time you read this column you will certainly know.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Samantha Folts, who celebrated her day Dec. 22; Hannah Rabasca and Zachary Vukota, Dec. 24; Neto Batista, Molly Pogue, Paige Pogue, and Spencer Pogue, who all celebrated Dec. 26, and to Caroline Conover, Emma Herrick and Rebecca Parente, who celebrated their day today, Dec. 20.
By the time you read this you will be eating leftover turkey sandwiches, or a ham sandwich or hash, or best of all — open-faced roast beef sandwiches. And of course all presents will be opened and some will still have their trees. There are those who take down their tree the day after Christmas. Whatever your traditions are, I hope you had a great day and were surrounded by family.
Members of the Federated Church of Edgartown are once again sponsoring their free lasagna luncheons beginning Jan. 5, and they continue every Sunday through March 30. The luncheon is held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Federated Church parish house on 45 South Summer street in Edgartown. The meals are free and all are welcome. Donations will not be accepted. Everyone was scurrying as Christmas Eve was approaching and I was watching everyone trying to figure out what they were going to get people for Christmas. It brought me back to my Village Fair days when we were busy with regular customers, then Christmas Eve would come and you saw husbands and boyfriends out on Main street looking for that special gift. They would come in and tell us they needed something and we would show them what we had. They would pick out an outfit and we would ask what size and they would look at us and point to one of us and say, “She is about your size.” Helping them was a pleasure and we watched them go out the door happy they had found something. But we always chuckled when the wives came in after New Year’s to exchange the sizes. It was a good time of year for us and I still remember those days fondly and I still chuckle.
New Year’s is coming and I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. If you are out on New Year’s Eve, please travel safely and if you drink, give a friend your keys or hire a cab.
