Edgartown’s aquaculture community could soon expand as town boards take a look at a proposal for an oyster farm north of Eel Pond.

Selectmen Monday gave their unanimous consent for Roy Scheffer’s proposal to grow oysters in the middle flats off Eel Pond in the Edgartown outer harbor. The oyster farm would be roughly 200 feet by 400 feet.

To date, the only oyster farms in Edgartown are located in Katama Bay, where there are 12 aquaculture businesses operating.

Shellfish constable Paul Bagnall said because this is a new area for aquaculture, it will require permission from the conservation commission and the Division of Marine Fisheries. The area of ocean has to have a nonproductive bottom to qualify for aquaculture.

Mr. Bagnall said that if all parties agree, a license could be granted by the spring.

In other business, the selectmen signed some final documents for the sale of the town-owned Warren House, which will be purchased by a private buyer for $2.5 million. The closing date for the sale is Thursday, town counsel Ronald H. Rappaport said. The selectmen also scheduled a meeting for Friday morning to discuss some of Mr. Rappaport’s concerns about a contract with Cape and Vineyard Electrical Cooperative for a town solar panel project.
