Stephen A. Duffy has been named the next head of school at Falmouth Academy by a unanimous vote of the school’s board of trustees.

Currently, Mr. Duffy is upper school principal of Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, N.J. He will assume the Falmouth Academy position on July 1, 2014.

Mr. Duffy, who has more than 25 years of independent school experience, received an undergraduate degree in English and a master’s degree in English literature from Middlebury College. He also earned a master’s degree in education in educational administration from Columbia University. A Reading, Mass., native (and a Red Sox fan), Mr. Duffy was director of Academic Studies and College Guidance and an upper school English teacher at Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, Penn., for eight years before he joined Rutgers Prep. Earlier in his career, he taught middle school humanities at the Gordon School in Providence, R.I., where he also coached cross country, boys’ basketball and girls’ lacrosse. In addition, he taught at the middle school level in Gainesville, Fla. He and his wife, Karen Loder, have two grown children.
