Condolences to the family, friends and Aquinnah neighbors of the Rev. Jay Cooke Michael Allen who passed away in September in St. Louis, Mo. He was predeceased by his wife, Rev. Priscilla Allen. For 42 years they and their children, Thomas, John and Sarah and three grandchildren enjoyed their Aquinnah summer home surrounded by their neighbors — the Johnson, Leonard, Majno and Weiss families. Michael Allen was an activist and crusader, having marched with Martin Luther King Jr. and traveled to Hanoi with Joan Baez. They opened their hearts and their doors to those less fortunate, the homeless, those affected with AIDS and many others. They will be missed, especially at this time of year which they enjoyed most on the Vineyard.

Condolences to the family and friends of Rosalie Silva Bassett who passed away at her Edgartown home on Friday. Services will be held this morning at St. Elizabeth’s Church. She was the matriarch of her family and one of the great historians of Edgartown. Her eldest son Gordon “Todd” Bassett and his daughters Meadow and Leah are all Aquinnah residents.

Condolences to the family and friends of Erick P. Vanderhoop who passed away on Monday afternoon at his Aquinnah home. He was not only a cousin but a friend. He and his older brother Buddy were playmates of ours in our Gay Head community. He was the second of seven children of Anne Vanderhoop Madison and the late William D. Vanderhoop Sr. Rick was the father of Heidi and Todd and beloved grandfather of Erick, Lewis, Ivan and Lyle. He is survived by his brothers and a sister: William D. Jr. (Buddy), David, Matthew (Cully), Brian (Chip) and Julianne. He is also survived by his aunt Marjorie Galbraith and uncle John Vanderhoop, and by his half-siblings Bernadette Crossland, Diamond, Durwood, Faith, Leigh and Naushon Vanderhoop, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was co-owner of Courtesy Motors in Tisbury and a lifelong hot rod enthusiast. Rick enjoyed the demolition derby of days past. He often was a judge at the annual Aquinnah Power Cruise. Ricky’s services will be held today at Community Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Rick’s friends and fellow hot rod enthusiasts will form a procession at the Aquinnah town hall at 12:30 p.m., so bring your hot rod, antique auto, motorcycle or other specialty automobile if you would like to be in the procession in honor of Rick. Graveside services will be held at North Cemetery on Rose Meadow Way. There will be a potluck gathering at the Aquinnah Shop Restaurant following the graveside service.
