Scallop season is on the way.
In Edgartown, the recreational bay scalloping season will start Oct. 1. All areas in town will be open, shellfish constable Paul Bagnall told the selectmen this week, but dragging will not be allowed at Cape Pogue Pond until after Nov. 1. There will be a limit of one level 10-gallon wash basket per week.
The commercial season opens Monday, Nov. 4 with a daily limit of three level 10-gallon wash baskets, including shells. Commercial scalloping will be allowed Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. All other rules and regulations still apply, Mr. Bagnall said.
At their meeting Monday, selectman approved the proposed scalloping dates.
Mr. Bagnall said he does not expect the same numbers as last season, when 8,000 bushels were brought in. He said he expected fewer than 2,000 bushels of scallops this year, as there was not a lot of seed.
The scallop season traditionally ends on March 31.
In Oak Bluffs, family scalloping opens in Sengekontacket Pond on Oct 12, and commercial season opens on Oct. 21. Lagoon Pond on the Oak Bluffs side opens for family scalloping on Nov. 2; commercial scalloping begins in the Lagoon on Nov. 4.
Scalloping is allowed in outside waters in Oak Bluffs beginning Oct. 5 for family shellfishermen and Oct. 7 for commercial permit holders.
Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah open their seasons later in the fall. There are no bay scallops in West Tisbury.
