Paul Schneider of West Tisbury has been named the new editor of the Martha’s Vineyard Magazine, publisher Jane Seagrave announced this week.

A longtime journalist who comes from a family of writers, Mr. Schneider is the author of five works of nonfiction, including the forthcoming Old Man River: The Mississippi in North American History. He previously held editing and contributor positions at national and regional magazines and news organizations, including Esquire, Elle, Mirabella, UPI and New England Monthly, and has contributed to many others including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Men’s Journal, Audubon, Travel & Leisure, Business Monthly and Oprah.

He succeeds Nicki Miller, who moved with her husband, Jim, to San Diego earlier this summer. Associate editor Nancy Tutko, who has served as interim editor pending Mr. Schneider’s appointment, will continue on the editorial team.

Mr. Schneider has lived seasonally or full-time on the Vineyard since 1990. His earlier books include The Enduring Shore, about Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod and Nantucket, which was critically acclaimed. He also wrote The Adirondacks, a New York Times notable book of the year, Brutal Journey, about the doomed 1524 expedition of Cabeza de Vaca, and Bonnie and Clyde. All were published by Henry Holt/Macmillan in New York and are still in print.

“Paul’s impressive professional background, his deep connection to the Vineyard and his vision for making a great publication even better makes him an ideal choice to lead Martha’s Vineyard Magazine,” Ms. Seagrave said. “We’re thrilled to have someone of Paul’s caliber and sensibilities join the magazine.”

Mr. Schneider makes his home in West Tisbury with his wife Nina Bramhall, a photographer and tennis instructor for Vineyard Youth Tennis. Their son, Nathaniel, graduated from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in June and is headed to the University of Vermont this fall.

Mr. Schneider will take the helm at the magazine in October.
