Hazy, hot and humid — we have had it all. Now we just need rain. Who would have ever thought we would need rain after June’s weather, but Mother Nature has spoken. Let’s just hope there is some relief somewhere.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to John Murray, who celebrated his day July 20; Riley Craig, July 21, Abigail Lively, July 23, Natalie Wallace, July 24 and to Owen Kleinhernz, who celebrated his day July 25.

July has flown by. I found myself at the Holy Ghost Feast with some friends and it was nice. We went late and by then a lot of people had cleared out, but we got to see people and friends we haven’t seen most of the summer. Plus Mother Nature was putting on a show of her own. The heat lightning was going on over the P.A. and there were many different colors of yellow and pink. At first I thought they were fireworks but every once in a while you could see the lightning bolts.

The ninth annual pancake breakfast to benefit the Cancer Support Group will be held August 11 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Federated Church on South Summer street in Edgartown. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children or $25 a family. The menu includes bacon, sausage and beverage as well.

The Possible Dreams Auction returns to Edgartown this Sunday, July 28. It’s the 35th year and the organizers have assembled an amazing collection of dreams, brought on board a new auctioneer, Boston comedian Jimmy Tingle, and renamed the event after the late Art Buchwald, who for so many years wielded the auctioneer’s gavel at the Harborside Hotel. The Buchwald family has passed Art’s auctioneer gavel to

Mr. Tingle, who has appeared on HBO, CNN, and 60 Minutes II and, is a big fan of Art Buchwald’s.

The auction will be at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort in Katama with doors opening at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, silent auction starting at 4 p.m. and the live auction at 5 p.m. Tickets to the auction are $25, and separately a few tickets remain for the dinner at the Lure restaurant inside the resort at 7:30 p.m.

The All Island Art Show Committee has issued a call to artists for this year’s show on Monday, August 5 at the Tabernacle in Oak Bluffs. This show has been running annually for four decades, giving a wonderful opportunity for amateur and professional artists alike to show and potentially sell their art. Also, several prizes are given. The only requirement is that the artists have an Island address, whether year-round or seasonal. Complete information, including the 2013 registration form, may be found on the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association website at mvcma.org.

It is bittersweet to see the old school come down. I know I talked about it last week, but now that the actual act is taking place I feel a little nostalgic. I know I’m not an Edgartown School graduate but I have been to many events in the school and saw my nieces and nephews in many class plays in the old gym and even took an exercise class there with Chris Harrington so many years ago. I know great things will come out of this and future children will benefit from these changes.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
