Come one and all to join the Animal Shelter’s contingent marching in the big parade on the Fourth of July in Edgartown. The Black Dog will be giving out commemorative T-shirts to the first 50 marchers to assemble. A donation of $10 to the shelter will guarantee you one of these keepsakes. The line will form between 4 and 5 p.m. behind the Edgartown School.

Good news on the adoption front. Roxy, the yellow Lab/border collie cross, has been reclaimed by her original owner. She has been spayed, given all her shots and microchipped. The owner will pay the usual fee to get his much improved dog back. The happiness of both owner and dog is a pleasure for the shelter workers as well.

The kitten list is nearly depleted and the shelter still has nine healthy, playful youngsters that need homes. There are three orange males, one tiger male who is a candidate for the Explorer’s Club, a black female, etc. A visit to the kitten room these days is an immersion in the sound of purring. They are all happy but in need of forever homes.

Now to the big cats — shelter size. We have the perfect pet for a Red Sox fan, Big Papi. Despite the gender confusion of the original owner, this is a female. She does, however, have whiskers. Hazel, the lovely tortoise shell lady, is still at the shelter. Could it be that she is the Greta Garbo of cats and “vants to be alone”? The person who finally claims her gets a free pet who loves petting and warm laps but no other felines in her space.

Shelter hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. The telephone number is 508-627-8662. Contributions are always gratefully accepted; the shelter is funded solely by donations. Please make checks out to The Animal Shelter of Martha’s Vineyard; the mailing address is P.O. Box 1829, Edgartown MA 02539.
