Chilmark sends congratulations to newlyweds Kristine Larsen Schiffer and Kirk Safford who were married at Menemsha on May 18. Merrily Fenner, justice of the peace, performed the ceremony on the bulkhead at Menemsha and a buffet luncheon followed. Kristine is known to many as one of the helpful and busy members of the staff at Larsen’s Fish Market and someone who grew up in Chilmark. We all send them cheers and good wishes.
We also send cheers to all the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School students who graduated on Sunday last. Best wishes to all for a successful and fulfilling future. Bill and Kathy Smith entertained at a graduation party for their daughter Katy following the ceremonies on Sunday.
The Chilmark Community Church is holding its annual end of school children’s fair on June 15 at the church. There will be pony rides, games, cupcakes and all kinds of fun beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting till noon. All are welcome at no charge.
The Jim Thomas Spiritual Choir will sing at the 9 a.m. worship service at the Chilmark church on June 15, and June 18 is the first Tuesday for the popular lobster rolls-to-go at the Chilmark church. They will be available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday throughout the summer. The Vineyard Sound, an a cappella singing group, will present a program on Tuesday nights at the church beginning at 8 p.m. All are invited and there is no charge.
The Chilmark Library’s weekly Wednesday evening program this week will be a talk about beach and cliff nesting birds of the Vineyard. The speakers will be wildlife biologists Luanne Johnson and Liz Baldwin. The program begins at 5 p.m. and these programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Chilmark Library and are free to all.
Congratulations to Luke Carlson who is graduating from high school this week in Manhattan and will go off to the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. Luke is the son of David and Catha Carlson of Peaked Hill and New York city. His grandparents, Bob and Barbara Day of West Tisbury, are attending the festivities in the city this week.
Kerin Mosiere is visiting the Slater family this week. She is from Melbourne, Australia, and is a cousin of mine. We share a set of great-grandparents and are enjoying our second reunion. She is celebrating the arrival of her second grandchild in New York city, and both are now citizens of the U.S. She looks forward to returning to the Vineyard next March.
Don and Susan Luce are spending some vacation time at their Chowder Kettle Lane home coming from Downingtown, Pa. They look forward to returning in early fall as they are off to a tour of Alaska this summer.
Conrad and Jane Neumann have arrived from Durham, N.C., to spend the coming season at their Larsen Lane home. Jane looks forward to participating in the Chilmark Community Church’s annual flea market on North Road.
Bill and Betsy Ramsey came from Wayland to their Larsen Lane home with plans for a family work weekend, but the weather limited all outside work so they may be back with the same intentions in the near future.
All of Chilmark sends warm and affectionate wishes to two popular women who will advance in age on June 14. Margarite Cottle will turn 94 and Rena Fischer will turn 98. Our community values them and sends them cheers in celebration.
The Yard is open for the season and has a schedule of events published. This weekend there are the Bessie Schönberg Mentorship Residency performances at 7 p.m. at the Patricia Nanon theatre on Middle Road. Next weekend will feature the Mitch Show, described as off-beat films of humor and pathos by filmmaker Mitchell Rose. Jack and Nina Huberman are in from Santa Fe for an extended visit to their Menemsha home.
Forrest and Ann Specht are at one of the Morgan cottages for a June vacation. They come from Amesbury each year for this visit.
Ed and Susan Weber with their children, Anna and Owen, are at their Larsen Lane cottage for a 10-day vacation and visit with Susan’s mother, Marjorie Phillips, also of Larsen Lane. The Webers live in Union, Maine, when not in Chilmark.
I will take this opportunity to thank the staff and many patrons of the Chilmark Library for the warm reception they gave me as retiring trustee on Tuesday last. I will cherish the warmth of their appreciation always and value the years I have shared with my community.
