The Tisbury town hall was briefly evacuated Friday afternoon after officials received a suspicious letter that police described as "ranting" but not particularly worrisome.

The letter contained no "particular threat to anybody or any town," Tisbury police Sgt. Timothy Stobie said, and the building was evacuated out of an abundance of caution.

Sergeant Stobie said employees cleared the building at 4 p.m. while police searched the building for signs of suspicious activity.

The letter was numbered, suggesting that more than one letter may have been sent out to various locations, Sergeant Stobie said. The postmark indicated it was sent from somewhere in Pennsylvania, and was signed by a woman who closed her correspondence with "please support your local Boy Scouts," he said.

The case is currently under investigation by Tisbury and state police.
