To help with the Vineyard Playhouse capital campaign, Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson will perform Love Letters on Tuesday, July 2 at the regional high school’s Performing Arts Center. After the show, winners of last year’s Possible Dreams bid will get to meet Ms. Steenburgen and Mr. Danson. The list of regrets at not having raised that auction paddle last summer is now very long.

Love Letters was written by A.R. Gurney and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It opened in 1988 at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven and then moved to New York city’s Promenade Theatre starring Kathleen Turner and John Rubinstein. Over the years a veritable who’s who of big time actors have starred in productions around the country — Elizabeth Taylor, Jason Robards, James Earl Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Carol Burnett and Mel Gibson, to name but a few. The play focuses on a couple sitting side by side at a table reading notes and letters that span nearly 50 years and tell the stories of their individual lives.

The Playhouse began its capital campaign last year. The downstairs is nearly finished but more money is needed to complete the upstairs stage.
