On Saturday, June 8, the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society (MVFS) and Heaven in Ocean Productions will host a pair of film screenings at the Film Center in Vineyard Haven in honor of World Oceans Day. The event will show the films Planet Ocean, a documentary addressing damage to the marine ecosystem, and Hot Tuna, which explores the Atlantic Ocean’s endangered bluefin tuna.

The screenings are part of a series called Across Sound Connections, which pairs an informative ocean film with a speaker to educate audiences about the ocean and the issues marine ecosystems face.

Across Sound Connections will be screening the director’s cut of Hot Tuna, which is narrated by broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough. Hot Tuna delves into the world of the Atlantic bluefin tuna, a warm-blooded giant of a fish whose sheer size and fascinating social behavior has attracted the attention of fishermen and scientists alike. A presentation by Eric Savetsky, the film’s second cameraman, and Wayne Davis, the film’s pilot, spotter and photographer will follow the screening.

World Oceans Day recognizes and celebrates the world’s oceans and seeks to raise awareness about the dangers they face. It was first proposed by Canada in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and was recognized by the United Nations in 2008. World Oceans Day focuses on a different theme each year and this year’s theme is “together we have the power to protect the ocean.” As part of this year’s theme, the coordinators of Saturday’s event are asking people to make a “promise for the ocean” and to upload a picture with their promise to a variety of social networking platforms.

Planet Ocean will show for free at 4 p.m. Hot Tuna screens at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Hot Tuna are $7 for MVFS members and $10 for nonmembers.
