For the third year in a row, the boys’ varsity tennis team advanced to the final round of the state sectionals tournament Wednesday. The Vineyarders swept visiting Dover-Sherborn 5-0 in a home match.

The finals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association south section division three tournament will be played Saturday in Barnstable at 4 p.m. The Vineyard will play the winner of tomorrow’s Westport-Norwell match. Westport, the number one seed in the bracket, is undefeated this season. The Vineyard boys are seeded number two.

As with the Tuesday match against Seekonk, Wednesday’s contest was short-lived, decided in an hour and 10 minutes. Senior Justice Yennie picked up the first Vineyard win with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Russ Daly at third singles. The first doubles team of senior Jackson McBride and junior Patrick McCarthy went 6-0, 6-3 against Alex Qian-Wang and Roberto Barbier.

Senior Kent Leonard remains undefeated in team play this year, as he picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Christian Baker. Second doubles pair Ryan Sawyer and Justin Smith defeated Alex Adamczyk and Emilio Fytopoulos 6-2, 6-2 and senior Natty Schneider, playing first singles, went 6-4, 6-1 over Stefano Barbier.

Coach Ned Fennessy congratulated the team after the match, noting that all seven starters had been named Eastern Athletic Conference all-stars. There are 10 all-star spots in the league.

“As they say, onward and upward,” Coach Fennessy said.
