In 2010 Jonathan Auerbach released a song called Brave Woman, Brave Man. All the proceeds from the song went to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a veterans’ organization that provides support to families of veterans who died in service to the U.S. and those who return home wounded. The fund is now in the midst of raising money to open satellite centers at military bases around the country where diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder will be determined. Mr. Auerbach is ready to help again.

On Sunday, May 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. he is hosting a combined salute to veterans and a benefit at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center in the Tisbury Marketplace, 79 Beach Road in Vineyard Haven. The concert's name — Brave Women, Brave Men — is a take on the title of his song.

Before the concert begins a short film, Fish Out of Water, will be shown. The film is about a group of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans with PTSD who come together during a fishing trip in Idaho.

Mr. Auerbach is a Katama guitarist, singer and songwriter who has spent several years working in Nashville and more recently began performing on the Island. He will merge music with a message to reach out to the community and raise awareness about veterans who have served in the past and who are serving in the military now.

“I was super concentrated on world events — who wasn’t after 9/11 — and looked around as a musician and noticed mostly country performers with a kick-your-ass attitude in their songs,” Mr. Auerbach explained. “I didn’t want to draw battle lines with music. I’m not political. I just want the music to honor the brave women and men who serve, and in Brave Woman, Brave Man I said what I wanted to say.”

Mr. Auerbach is teaming up with Jo Ann Murphy, Dukes County veterans agent. Ms. Murphy said there are currently 200 to 300 veterans living on Martha’s Vineyard. When she first came to the Island 12 years ago, the number was closer to 350. “We’ve lost a lot of veterans since then,” she said.

“I never know what someone will need who comes through my door,” Ms. Murphy wrote in an email. “Most of these veterans and spouses or widows are living on social security and below the poverty level.”

Mr. Auerbach will be joined by vocalist Carole Charlin and Alejandro Carreño on percussion at the memorial concert. While the concert and movie are free, a suggested donation is $10 with proceeds benefitting the Dukes County Veterans Services. Mr. Auerbach’s CDs will be available for purchase at the benefit, and he said any proceeds from their sale will go to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
