Full access to the Vineyard Gazette’s website, mvgazette.com, will be limited to subscribers again starting Tuesday, June 4.

After that date, readers who do not have a subscription will be able to read 10 stories a month on the site before encountering a pay wall, said Gazette publisher Jane Seagrave. Obituaries, classified advertising and certain other content will remain freely accessible, she said.

Subscribers will need to log in to the site in order to gain access to the Gazette’s full content.

The Gazette traditionally has restricted its online content to subscribers, but mvgazette.com was opened to the public after it was redesigned last fall. The purpose was to allow readers an opportunity to sample the depth and breadth of the Gazette’s news and information, including archives of past stories, Ms. Seagrave said.

She said the newspaper decided to adopt what is known as a metered pay wall approach based on the experience of other newspapers around the country. Giving people access to 10 stories a month allows readers with only an occasional interest in news from Martha’s Vineyard to read individual stories.

Subscribers to the print newspaper automatically are entitled to full access to the website. Online-only subscriptions are also available from the Gazette.

Last week, the Gazette announced it will discontinue its seasonal Tuesday print edition this summer, but will begin providing free twice-weekly news updates via email starting in June. Subscribers to the Gazette who have an email address on file will automatically receive the email news updates. Nonsubscribers can sign up to receive the newsletters at mvgazette.com/newsletter.
