Spring — aha! The temperatures have been in the mid 60s this week. The first hummingbird arrived at the feeder on Sunday. The lilacs are beginning to bud and, finally, many lawns are once again green. The Aquinnah Shop is anticipating opening day on Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day events will be held at the Aquinnah Public Library on Saturday, May 11. The children will make crafts, including picture frames for their mothers. In the afternoon, the moms will have a very proper tea from 1 to 3 p.m.

The annual Aquinnah town meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 14, with a special town meeting at 6:45 p.m., and the annual town meeting beginning at 7 p.m. The annual Aquinnah election will be held on Wednesday, May 15, with the polls open from noon to 7 p.m.

Have you read Everyday Heroes: The True Story of a Lighthouse Family written by Seamond Ponsart Roberts and Jeremy D’Entremont? Seamond was raised on Cuttyhunk and then at the West Chop Lighthouse where her father was the lighthouse keeper. Seamond fondly remembers many of her friends from her days at Tisbury School and residing on the Vineyard. The book is presently available at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum or may be purchased at NELights@gmail.com.

Get well wishes to Anna Cass, daughter of Lisa Pachico and Michael Cass, and step-granddaughter of Forrest Alley. Anna was injured in an automobile accident in April and has been transferred from U-Mass Medical Center to Spaulding Rehab in Sandwich. Her address is Anna Cass, Room 261, 311 Service Road, Sandwich, MA 02537. She would enjoy hearing from her Vineyard friends.

Condolences to the family and friends of Garth Williams Edwards, who passed away over the weekend at his winter home in Essex, Conn. Many joyous days were spent with Garth and his late wife Ollie. Every day was a different adventure with Garth, with Ollie not really approving of some of his adventurous plans. In their 73 years of marriage though, she often allowed him to have his way. He made the most of his 97 years, from the midwest farms to the NRC in Aitken, S.C., and his illustrious career with Stanley Tools in New Britain. He served them all very well. Garth and Ollie spent more than 40 summers at their beautiful home at the top of Abel’s Hill where four generations would spend part of their summers, especially to gather for Garth’s birthday in August and again for Thanksgiving. Garth was very proud of his family and their many accomplishments. He is survived by his children Garth Nance Edwards and his wife Jenny of Southport, N.C.; Nancy Thompson and her husband Hilly of Dover, Mass., and Tisbury, as well as by his grandchildren Garth Ross Edwards, Cathy Edwards and Libby Edwards, and Christopher Thompson, Cortney Thompson, and Benjamin Thompson and their families, which include eight great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by many for his humor, kindness, generosity and wisdom. A memorial service will be held this summer for Garth and Ollie.

Get well wishes to Rodeo Langer, who had one of the worst cases of poison ivy that I have seen in years. I met up with Molly and Rodeo on the ferry two weeks ago. His eyes were nearly shut but his spirits were not dampened at all.

Olive and Violet MacPhail spent part of their school vacation in Manhattan, undoubtedly shopping on Fifth avenue The photograph of them at school is in the Vineyard Gazette today. Before their departure for Manhattan, they attended a movie and then dinner with their neighbor Noah Manning and the Trimmer children, who were here from their winter home in Connecticut.

Noah Manning spent his school vacation on an overnight trip to Mystic, Conn., with his mom, Theresa; Kendra Buresch and her children, Oona and Emme; and Kelly McCracken with her daughter Reece and her brother Grady. They spent one day at the Mystic Aquarium and the next day at Mystic Seaport. Noah ended his vacation week with a Red Sox game with his parents, Paul and Theresa. Members of the Boston Police Department, Mayor Thomas Menino and Governor Deval Patrick were at the game too. Everyone enjoyed Neil Diamond singing Sweet Caroline, and the best part was that the Red Sox won that day.
