Two well-known Vineyard runners who participated in the Boston Marathon are safe and unharmed following the explosions at the finish line Monday afternoon that made instant international news.

In a text message to the Gazette late Monday, Joe Schroeder said his wife and marathon runner Marylee Schroeder was safe. “All good and [we’re] out of Boston,” Mr. Schroeder said in his text message.

Mrs. Schroeder works as a school administrator. Mr. Schroeder is the regional high school track coach and teaches at the West Tisbury School.

Kim O’Callaghan was another Vineyard runner who was reported to be safe. She could not be immediately reached by the Gazette.

Mrs. Schroeder crossed the finish line at 2:02 p.m., posting a final time of three hours, 38 minutes, according to the Boston Marathon website. The other Vineyard runner, who was believed to be Ms. Callaghan, crossed the finish line at 2:34 p.m.

Oak Bluffs native Jack McGroarty, who lives in Boston and works at the Prudential Center, was in the area with friends at the time of the explosions, and described a chaotic scene.

“You could hear all different kinds of people running and screaming and crying,” he told the Gazette by telephone. “We did our best to huddle together and jog.”
