Condolences to the family and friends of Priscilla West Dickson who passed away this week. Priscilla was a schoolmate of our dad, James, when they were students at the Tisbury School. Priscilla and her late husband, Arthur Dickson, were the two people who placed the American flags on the graves of our veterans at the North Cemetery in Aquinnah each Memorial Day weekend. A very impressive patriotic sight to see.

Dr. Thomas Green and company were in Aquinnah over the weekend at his home. It’s always so nice to see him around town.

All the best to Thad Hyland and his family who will be returning to California in the near future. We will miss them but will look forward to their visits.

Condolences to the family and friends of Antone Jardin, who passed away at his home in Chicago this week. He is survived by his siblings Kenneth, Edward and Joseph Belain and Mark, Tamara, Rebecca, Pia, Randy, Abigail, Christy and Amy Jardin, as well as his aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and many cousins. Antone was the son of the late Captain Antone Jardin and Shirley Francis.

Did you notice Ella Madison Mahoney and her artistry on the cover of Martha’s Vineyard Magazine Not Summer 2012-2013 issue? Ella is the daughter of Julianne Vanderhoop and Michael Mahoney and is already a nationally-recognized artist while completing her senior year at the regional high school.

Have you read Michael Pollan’s latest book Cooked? It was just recently released and is definitely a must read while at the beach this summer where you may even find Michael one afternoon.

Aquinnah firefighter Bill Smith is organizing a Minnesingers reunion concert for this summer season. If you are a Minnesingers alumni, please contact Bill at smoutboards@comcast.net. It would be a great gathering of all the singers from over the decades, which was originated by our late music teacher Thomas Mills. Some of our Aquinnah residents were alumni: Jeffie Butler, Nina Butler, Naushon Vanderhoop and Jesse Wiener, just to name a few.

Condolences to the family and friends of Elisha Smith who passed away last Friday at his home. Elisha always had a great smile and perhaps a tale or two if you had a minute to share. He was the grandfather of Vineyard farming, and one I admired for more than half a century as he was the father of my classmate the late Rosemary Smith Donnelly. Elisha will be greatly missed for his knowledge of so much Vineyard history.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Steve Durkee, who sings his best tenor opera pieces while editing my column each week. He will party on March 31. Those sharing the day on April 1 will be Linda Fischer, Peggy Yoars and Allison Barrett. Audrey Jeffers-Mayhew will celebrate on April 2 and shares the day with Levi Moreis, who will be 12 years old. Sharing April 4 will be Nancy Delaney, Rose Styron, Mary Wolfson, Bonnie Chalifoux, Chris Murphy, Gary Paraboschi, Amira Madison, Deborah Mayhew, Isolete Fernandes and Shelby Ives.
