The Martha’s Vineyard girls’ hockey team is now just one win away from a trip to the playoffs following a 4-2 win against Hanover this weekend. Head coach John Fiorito described the Vineyarders’ win as their best game of the year and a much-needed league victory.
The offense started out strong with freshman Belle Dinning scoring a quick first goal on an assist from sophomore Sydney Davies, followed by an unassisted breakaway goal from senior captain Emily Cimeno in the first period.
Hanover responded with two goals at the top of the second period. But with 5:50 left in the second, sophomore Aubrey Ashmun flipped a goal on a power play with an assist from senior Tayla Kuehne. Senior captain Kassidy Bettencourt put in the insurance goal with 2:32 left in the game on an assist from Dinning.
Senior goalie Texe Craig finished the game with 32 saves, most coming from a third-period barrage.
They are now 8-4-2 and 6-3-2 in league play. They host non-league opponent Nauset on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. A win will earn them a spot in the postseason tournament for the second year in a row.
The boys’ hockey team, the only other varsity team to play this weekend, didn’t fare so well in a Saturday evening match.
The boys drew first blood against Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Bishop Feehan with a goal from senior Shay Hill and assists from senior Huck Burke and sophomore Andrew Wiley.
But as the third period began, Feehan, up 2-1, entered the period firing on all cylinders. The Shamrocks earned their third goal two minutes in, fended off the Vineyard with a rough, physical game, and took advantage of two power plays to seal their 5-1 win.
The Vineyard boys, who secured their spot in the postseason last month, are now 10-4-1. They travel to Somerset on Wednesday.
In home court action this week, the boys’ basketball game hosts Coyle and Cassidy Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
