As one hunting season goes out with a bang, another begins. The Martha’s Vineyard Rod & Gun Club will host its 13th annual Black Powder Shoot on Sunday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., one day before primitive firearm deer season opens on the Island.

The muzzle-loading marksmanship competition gives Island black powder shooters an opportunity to sight in their ancient guns and hone their shooting skills before going out into the field. Members and the public are invited to participate. There will be a nominal entry fee. Competitive events involve loading, shooting and reloading for accuracy and points. There will be two firearm classifications, as well as prizes for both traditional and modern muzzleloaders. Scopes are allowed.

Prizes include hams donated by Cronig’s markets. The overall winner will be awarded a Black Powder Champion’s trophy and have his name engraved on the Black Powder clubhouse perpetual plaque.

Spouses and children are invited to enjoy the day’s action for free.
