Editors, Vineyard Gazette:

The following letter was sent to the West Tisbury selectmen. I write you now about the next town meeting’s question involving the Mill Pond.

Dredging is extremely disruptive as well as expensive. I believe there should be a comprehensive study done by appropriate experts of the entire system of Mill Brook and its tributaries whether or not any dredging is done.

Water temperature, fish and other animals living there, historical value, scenic beauty, comparative costs, the possibility of removing the dam — all of these and more will have to be taken into consideration once the study has been completed.

Only after that will the time come to decide on the best, most natural future of the brook complex and ponds.
