Edgartown police arrested a man and woman this week on several charges, including prostitution and theft.

Gabriel Rios-Leon, 20, of Rockaway, N.J., and Shannon M. Owens, 27, of New York, N.Y., were arraigned Thursday morning in Edgartown district court. Police said they came to the Island Tuesday when an Edgartown man solicited Ms. Owens for sexual favors after she posted a Craigslist ad.

According to police reports filed in court, the Edgartown man picked Ms. Owens up at the ferry, with Mr. Rios-Leon along to deal with money and for protection. Police said the three went to the man’s house on Eighteenth street, where Ms. Owens allegedly attacked the man early Wednesday morning after a disagreement about their transaction, which allegedly cost $1,800. Police allege that a physical altercation broke out and Ms. Owens took the man’s cell phone, laptop computer and wallet before leaving the house with Mr. Rios-Leon.

After a neighbor asked Mr. Rios-Leon and Ms. Owens to be quiet, police said, Ms. Owens allegedly smashed his car window with a rock. Police were called, and Mr. Rios-Leon and Ms. Owens allegedly fled. Police searched the woods and then apprehended the two an hour and a half later, at about 6:30 a.m.

Ms. Owens was charged with refusing to identify herself, larceny more than $250, receiving stolen property more than $250, malicious destruction of property more than $250, assault and battery, and sexual conduct for a fee.

Mr. Rios-Leon is charged with receiving stolen property and deriving support from prostitution.

Bail was set at $3,500 for both, and pretrial hearings set for Oct. 12.

Editor's Note: This story has been updated to provide Ms. Owens' correct first name. Edgartown police determined that Ms. Owens had falsely given the name of her sister at the time of her arrest.
