Head coach Donald Herman was hard-pressed to recall another time in his career when the Vineyarders have staged a 37-point second-half comeback, but that’s exactly what happened last Friday night when the team traveled to Brighton. The Vineyarders came away with a 45-38 win to move their season record to 2-1.

Down 16-0 after the first quarter, the Vineyard made its first move on senior quarterback Alec Tattersall’s touchdown pass to senior Stuart Hersh. Senior Brandon Watkins made the two-point conversion to move the score to 16-8, but Brighton responded immediately; the team was down 22-8 at the start of the second half.

The second half was a bit like a heavyweight fight, Coach Herman said, filled with punches and counterpunches. Brighton “had the ability to score at will,” but the Vineyard offense was able to rally and return the favors. Tattersall turned in three more touchdown passes and contributed a one-yard sneak of his own, while senior Doug Andrade rushed 49 yards for a touchdown. Senior Brandon Watkins and junior Joe Turney each had a two-point conversion. Senior Mike Cutrer kicked three extra points for the team.

In another first of Coach Herman’s career, the team missed the last ferry — despite moving the game’s start time up a half an hour — and had to take the Patriot boat back to the Vineyard.

Field Hockey

The girls remain unbeaten going into their second month of play, having picked up three more wins this week. Last Thursday, the team traveled to Needham, where they took a 2-0 win. Kendall Robinson scored on an assist from junior Issy Smith, and assisted on the Vineyard’s second goal, a Taylor Poggi score.

On Saturday, Robinson again landed the first Vineyard goal, on an assist from Alex Clark, and notched the assist on Kat Dorr’s goal. She continued her formidable run on Tuesday in the team’s game against then-undefeated West Bridgewate; both of the Vineyard goals were Robinson’s. The senior captain is “having a banner year,” head coach Lisa Knight told the Gazette, and leads the league in scoring.

Senior goalkeeper Kathryn Antonssen has also been “stellar” this season, Coach Knight said. Antonssen is also first in the league; only five goals have been scored against her all season.

“It’s game by game,” Coach Knight said, “And I just think they want it so bad, and they’re a really close-knit group of girls . . . and it’s great.”

Scores from the team’s Thursday game against Westport were unavailable at press time.

Cross Country

The boys’ team took fifth place in a field of 35 schools at the annual Manchester Invitational meet in New Hampshire last Saturday, with senior Michael Schroeder placing 21st overall in a field of 252 with a time of 17:13 Senior Cooper Chapman and junior Kyle Joba-Woodruff finished within seconds of one another to take 34th (17:35) and 36th (17:39), respectively. Sophomore Phoebe Dandaneau (25:29) and junior Lucy Norris (26:17) rounded out the varsity squad.

Boys’ Soccer

The team took a 0-0 draw against visiting Bishop Stang on Tuesday, despite outpacing their opponents in shots on goal. Last Thursday, the Vineyarders picked up a 1-0 win over league opponent Coyle Cassidy.

Evandro Medici, freshman Noah Kleinhenz and senior captains Rodrigo Honorato and Jack Roberts share a three-way tie for second-place in scoring in the Eastern Athletic Conference. Senior goalkeeper Jackson McBride is in second place in saves percentage.

Girls’ Soccer

The Vineyarders took two 1-0 losses in league play this week, but head coach Richard Bennett said he was nevertheless impressed by the team’s play during Tuesday’s away game against Bishop Stang, a historically strong team.

“I thought we were pretty evenly played in the first half,” Coach Bennett said. “We really held our own.”
