Chilmark was a lively place this past weekend. There were lots of people, activities and energy. There were motorcycles on tour, sailboats on moorings and fishermen everywhere! Saturday there were filmmakers doing their thing in Menemsha where scenes for a movie were shot. A helicopter hovered overhead with a camera working on its bow. Hopefully, we were all included, most of us looking up!
Monday was the start of the American Heroes fourth annual Saltwater Challenge fishing derby hosted by the Nixons of Beach Plum Inn and more. The weather was sunny though windy, but the boats were out and we heard many catches were made. The National Geographic is preparing a documentary about the veterans fishing derby and they were busy taking pictures on the ground and in the air. A helicopter flew low and long over the harbor and we hope they captured some good fishing scenes. The documentary will be shown on the National Geographic channel later this year. Good luck to all! It is a feel-good event that all of the participants will remember for a long time. Many volunteers and lots of money make it all happen every year. You may contribute by mailing a check to Wings Over America and mailing it to the Beach Plum Inn.
Congratulations to Gigi McCreery of Venice, Ca. who won an Emmy last week for the best scripted children’s program. It was called Wizards of Waverly Place and was on the Disney Channel for four years. Gigi is the daughter of Max and Connie McCreery of South Road. She has a new show coming out in October on the Nickelodeon Channel starring Scott Baio in See Dad Run. Cheers from us all!
The Chilmark Community Church invites us all to an organ concert on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. Seven Island organists will play on the new pipe organ and the builder, Stephen Russell of Chester, Vt., will be here to enjoy the sounds of his labor. The pizza nights continue on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at the church. All are welcome to join and games are played afterward. Please call Julie Flanders if you plan to attend so that she can order for all.
Bill Vincent visited the family home on South Road last week. He reports that his twin granddaughters, Vivian and Natalie Persons, enjoyed their first visit to Chilmark last month and will be back next summer to continue the fun.
Don and Nancy Mae Hurley were in town last week visiting their Quitsa home. They will visit again from their home in Lloyd’s Harbor, N.Y. before winter comes.
Helen Bass of Virginia has come for a visit with her daughter, Donna Cully, at her home on South Road.
Best wishes from us all to Ted Meinelt who, as I write, is at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital following a fall in his home. We hope he will be out soon and feeling fit. Terry Meinelt of Topsfield and Chilmark is with Ted this week.
Please mark your calendars for the 30th Women’s Symposium coming Oct. 27 at the Chilmark Community Center from 9 a.m. to noon. The topic will be Unexpected Harvests and several guest speakers will address that subject. There will be refreshments, and donations are requested to cover Symposium costs. All are welcome.
Ed Greenebaum and Joan Caulton of Bloomington, Ind. and Chilmark have arrived at their Chilmark home and, in a reversal of tradition, will spend the winter here.
There will be a public meeting at the Chilmark Library on Monday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. The subject under discussion will be the parking situation in and around Beetlebung Corner during summer events. All interested parties are invited to participate. Selectman William Rossi will chair the meeting.
We send good wishes this week to Dr. Conrad Neumann, who underwent surgery at a Boston hospital this week. We hope to see him out and about soon. He plans to return to his Menemsha home for his recuperation before returning to North Carolina for the winter months.
