The Holmes Hole Sailing Association continued its Thursday evening series of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a 6 p.m. race on July 26. It was a warm summer evening with a north wind. Eleven boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater for the triangular course

Mo Flam finished first in the Alerion 28 Penelope, followed by Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31 Stormalong and Bow Van Riper in the Vineyard 15 Tyche. In fourth was Andy Berry in Isobar, followed by Mike Loberg in Masquerade, Phil Hale in Wicked, Stuart Halpert in Providence, Dan Pesch in Sparrow, Dan Culkin in Magic Time, David Lott in Avanti and Whit Hanschka in Sally.

The summer racing series continued on Sunday, July 29 with a Sound race across to Falmouth and back, with a moderate north wind. Eight boats came for the noon start in spite of the gloomy weather and threatening rain. The fleet beat to windward to Falmouth and ran downwind home.

Finishing first in the A division was Mo Flam in the Alerion 26 Penelope, followed by Phil Hale in the Shields Wicked and Mike Loberg in the Morris 36 Masquerade. In third was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31 Stormalong. Fourth was Roger Becker in Gloria and fifth was Ed Cerullo in Undine.

In the B division, Beck Colson finished first in the Nonsuch Silhouette. Second was David Lott in the Cape Dory 27 Avanti. Myfanwy retired.

The Sunday race concluded the July series, which was won by Mo Flam in Penelope in the A Division and John and Lisa Stout in Isabella in the B Division.

The season continued August 2 with a 6 p.m. race. With an 11-knot west wind, 13 boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven breakwater. A triangular course was set with the fleet sailing to red nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23A at East Chop, and returning to the finish line at red nun 6.

Finishing first was Mo Flam in the Alerion 28 Penelope. In second was David Lott in the Cape Dory 27 Avanti. In third was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31 Stormalong.

The summer racing series continued on Sunday, August 5 with two Harbor races.

In the first race, finishing first in the A division was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31 Stormalong. In second was Stephen Besse in the J-120 Apres. In third was Andy Berry in the Cal 35 Isobar.

Bow Van Riper finished first in the B division in the Vineyard 15 Tyche. Second was Beck Colson in the Nonsuch Silhouette. Third was David Lott in the Cape Dory 27 Avanti.

Thirteen boats also posted for the second race at 2 p.m., where the wind speed had increased to a robust 20 knots with higher gusts.

Dan Culkin was first in the B division in the Vineyard Vixen Magic Time. Second was Stuart Halpert in the Ensign Providence. Third was Beck Colson in the Nonsuch Silhouette.

Finishing first in the A division was Mo Flam in the Alerion 28 Penelope. In second was Jerry Goodale in the Pearson 31 Stormalong. In third was Mike Loberg in the Morris 3, Masquerade.

The season continues with a night race at 6 p.m. on August 9 and the Tarpaulin Cove Rendezvous on August 12 at 10 a.m.
