We could not ask for better weather than we have had this past week. Warm days and cool nights is something we all pray for. But from a garden person’s view, we do need some rain to help the plants grow.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Parker Ben David, who celebrated his day July 7; Matthew Fish and Emily Gilley, who celebrated July 9; and to Madeline Chronister, who celebrates her day today, July 13.
Special birthday wishes to Richard (Stoney) Stone, who celebrated his day July 10. He also had a good reason to celebrate, as he has a new knee. So, happy birthday, Stoney, and here is to good health and a lot of pain-free walking.
The Edgartown School’s eighth grade class has their 22nd annual Garden Walking Tour and Tea on Wednesday, July 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. Rain date: July 19. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Edgartown Books or Saffron. This is to benefit the eighth grade’s trip to Washington, D.C. There are nine beautiful gardens on the south side of Edgartown this year, with a tea at the Federated Church Parsonage on South Water street.
The Martha’s Vineyard Tick Borne Disease Initiative and Tufts University are conducting telephone surveys during the month of July. The calls will be focused on the 627 exchange. This important phone survey will administer a CDC questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes and behavior about Lyme disease, the answers for which may help determine methods of intervention against Lyme disease that are most acceptable to the community.

Things are settling down and the company has gone home, but not without some touring. We made our way to Oak Bluffs on Sunday, which took some pretty smooth talking for Ralph to go, but off we went and had a rather tasty lunch at the Sandbar, then on to the Flying Horses for Sabrina to ride on her first carousel. I couldn’t help but think of my dad, because when we first moved to the Island in 1963, one of his jobs was running the carousel. Of course, I made out because I got to ride for free, but Dad said he would always have the music in his head. I thought how proud he would be that his great granddaughter is now riding on those same horses.
If you have cable TV and can get the Island Channel 13, keep and eye open for Growing Up in Edgartown. The interview was done at the Anchors and Bailey Norton, Nelson Smith, Ted Morgan, Phyllis Galley Coleman, Sandy Fisher, Yvonne Sylvia, Rosalie Bassett, and Bob Carroll all had stories to share of the waterfront and what it was like in Edgartown. I did not watch the whole program, but what I watched was great. If you have a computer you can go onto MVTV.org and look at the schedule, or even put Growing up in Edgartown in the search box. If you don’t have cable and have a computer, you can watch it right on the computer.
